Glenn " The Brain " Titan enlightened me the other day regarding custom helmets . ( Crowd cheer - Hoooray ! )

Simply put , if you make a custom helmet , and put in the Helmets/GP79 folder , you'll be able to choose the helmet within rFactor . Not only that , but if you have say 3 or 4 helmets , from other drivers in there , you'll see those helmets online as well .

So , to try and keep things all in one place here , even though we may not have alot of helmets anyways , I started this thread .

I'll update the zipfile as helmets appear . Unzip this file into your C:\Program Files\rFactor\GameData\Helmets\GP79. It won't overwrite anything .

Kinda cool. I made one but it looks all pastel in game...something on my end probably...

Mike , did you use the .psd supplied by GP79 in thier helmet folder ?  You need to make sure those other layers are present , and on , when you flatten the layers .

It's weird though , because for the 2 I've played with , I just edited a couple helmets that where already present in the all_cars folders .

Something went whacky with yours , I'll see if I can fix it   ;)

Ok , here we go , try this out Mike . I didn't test it , but it should be good to go  :D  I took the original 79_HELMET.PSD , then put yours on top of that , and saved it as a .dds and it should be cool .

Cheers !

Another helmet I whipped up , staying with that late 70's look , it's added to the MRC zipfile and you can grab it below as well...

Mike , you had the same problem as before . I fixed it again and uploaded it to your post , so no worries , but you might want to DL it .

Are you using the .PSD Helmet GPC provided ?  Or are you taking one of the AI drivers helmet and painting over that ?

The PSD. has 4 or 5 layers to it , shadow , bumpmap ect , and you need to have those checked "on" when you combine all the layers into 1 , and save it as a .DDS . The only thing that shouldn't be checked is the wire mesh . And even that won't cause any harm IIRC cause it's burried under the others .

Nice helmet btw , I like that one much better man

Oddamnit!!!!!  Really?  At least this one looks ok on my end but I'll check your update.

I'm using the .psd.  I open it up and I have 5 layers.
Shadow
Colour
Shadowmap
Bumpmap
Wire.

I had them all on except the Wire layer then I saved it as a .jpg (no .dds plugin for this software) then convert it to .dds with another app.  Maybe it's the .jpg or maybe it's the conversion that's ucking it up.  Anyway, thanks for the fix.

That's gotta be it . Maybe try saving as a .bmp and see what happens . I notice right away when I unzip it into my helmet folder , your helmet .dds image is as clear as a bell , where the rest of the .dds helmets are very dark in shadow , as far as the WIN thumbnail images go .

I resized it to 512 as well  ;)

Kardum31 : Here's my simple design.

Same problem Mike has , some layers are missing on this one Kman and you seem to have lightened the whole picture , including the face . I'll fix it up and repost it in your post , and add it to our MRC Helmet zip .

I don't understand that, as I saved it straight to .dds.

What's the standard procedure with these files?

Your helmet was fine , but you had the face , and some other stuff greyed , and it mucked up the inner helmet . You can resize these to 512X512 as well , it'll save ya some draw time .

I added a better face to the helmet , took your paint and put it on the original 79_HELMET.psd , and it looks a little nicer imo . I'm not sure why these are coming out like this for some guy's , but it's as if the contrast is lost for some reason , or maybe the shadow . Did you have all the layers clicked on before you flattened the .PSD image ?

Anyway's , if you want the update , here it is , let it overwrite the original .

Original on the right , update is the pic on the left .

It looked as though you tried to lighten something up , and you ended up making the whole paint layer brighter .

Anyway's , I'm not a total pro at this stuff , and I'm only trying to help since it would be very cool to see all our own helmets out there .

The way I do things...

- Open the 79_HELMETS.PSD in PS CS2
- Open one of the AI driver helmets that were redone by someone ( forget name ) at RSC and steal a better face .
- Apply that to the face in the 79_HELMET.PSD
- Then start painting , making sure I'm either adding to the proper layer , or , creating a new layer which is the best way to go .
- After editing everything , I make sure everything is checked on in the layer table , except wire frame , and merge all the layers .
- Save it as a .DDS

That's it .

Well, I was looking at the replay from the Interlargos race and I noticed that I did not have on my personal painted helmet.

But Omar Gomez sure was looking good in my helmet.

Did anyone have the correct helmet?
