Sorry about having to skip out early. No problems. Just a family phone call I wanted to take. Hope everyone had fun and that my leaving didn't cause any issues.

Hi, fellas.  I'd like to canvas the membership to learn what wing settings you employed for our Keimola races.  On a circuit where the vast majority of the corners limit speeds to barely 60mph or even less, theory says that aero downforce and adhesion should not figure.  I'm concerned that this mod gives you downforce regardless of speed and that shouldn't be the case.

I was using 11/13 or so. But I'm not very fast either. Maybe with lots of wing you can go faster and then the wing is more effective? :stupid:

Even with wing the car would slide in and out of the corners. I don't mind sliding into a corner but would rather not slide on exit. While adjusting the setup during practice, I found that with a higher ride height in the rear and stiffer roll bar in the rear, the car turned in much better. I went from a 7.75 front and 9.75 rear to 9.25 front and 11.25 rear which helped with turn 1.

Thanks for that input, Jimmy, Tom.

I ran the Matra MS11 V-12 car with 1°F/0°R.  The small front wing angle was an effort to help pin down the front end in the tight corners.  It's not the fastest car in a straighline but seeing as how virtually all the corners here at Keimola are quite slow, I figured that tuning for top end would pay dividends.  I did precisely the same quite a few years back at this very circuit in our GP69 cars where I used the Ferrari 312.  I was able to set reasonably competitive times and was a bullet on the straights.  I was nowhere in the GP68's in our two races here and can see by comparing speeds in GPLRA that I'm losing all my time in the corners and by a bunch.  I strongly suspect that by merely dialing in wing angle, you get downforce regardless of speed.  Aero doesn't work that way.  You need to be above about 70-80mph to start seeing benefits.

I'm going to conduct some tests at Keimola with my Matra on different settings and some other chassis to see what I can make of things.

Thanks again for the input, chaps.

Let us know what you find out ... unless it's info you want to use against us later. ;)

From memory of working on other mods, GPL has lift/downforce and drag values not only for the wings but also for the car bodies as well and these could also be lift rather than downforce, i.e. as you go faster the car actually gets lighter and has less grip. (EDIT: Admittedly this might not be in all mods. I can't remember which mods started modelling this, certainly 66 mod has car body lift, but earlier mods might not have this feature).

Again, but only from memory, you need about 4 deg of wing to offset the body lift and actually break even for balance of lift and downforce with increasing speed. Obviously having wings on does also increase drag though and the more wing angle the more drag so it is all a trade off. I also cannot remember if setting the wing as 0 degrees in the setup screen is the same as actually dismounting it. Physically it would not be as you would have more drag with the wing there but set at 0 degrees, but get no downforce from it, whereas actually dismounting the wing would give less drag and the same no downforce. I don't know how GPL handles this though.

Rob

Hi, Rob!  :)  Long time, no see, amigo.  Good to see you posting here again.

I have conducted some comprehensive tests at Keimola in the Matra MS11 both with and without wings.  I have data and am in the process of developing a piece to post here soon.  Stay tuned...
