Terrible Problem

23 November 2018 - 03:40 PM

My G27 is working just fine in GPL, but when I join the server, it loses all it's assignments except the wheel and will not recognize the pedals at all.  I go back to GPL, reset it, and it works fine.  Back to the sever, and the problem is back.  I need some ideas before tomorrow's race!  All these joins (sever,GPL) are through GEM.

Strange Thing

I have a G25 or 27?.  Anyway, I was practicing this afternoon.  Everything worked fine in practice, except my talent, of course.  When we lined up for the start, everything working great - took off well, then, when we reached the first corner, I was unable to downshift!  Anyone else ever had this happen?  Any ideas of what it could have been?

Observation On Racing Technique

26 May 2018 - 11:08 AM

My excellent team leader, Michael, recently examined a replay of mine in hopes of giving me some help. He noticed that I was doing something strange with the throttle under braking. I didn't realize that I was sort of pumping the throttle under hard braking. The answer, however, has now become clear to me.

Yesterday, when I was young, my brother and I raced enduro karts all over the Midwest. We participated, for example, in the IKF national championships in 1970, at Indianapolis Raceway Park. The karts were powered by modified chainsaw engines and had no transmission. The engine was connected to the rear wheels through a centrifugal clutch, set to engage at about 10K rpm.   As a result of this connection, the engine would drop to an idle when you let off to brake. Sometimes, when it dropped to an idle, it would die. This only had to happen to you once for you to realize that you were now out of the race. To keep this from happening, one learned that, while braking, it was necessary to pump the throttle so that the engine was never allowed to drop all the way to an idle.

About fifty years later, I find the habit is still with me. I have to consciously tell myself not to pump the throttle under hard braking. Habits are a weird thing.  :)
