Topics I've Started

16 April 2018 - 08:18 AM

I spent an hour or so of flailing around here yesterday and soon realized that even if you dropped my car out of an airplane, I was never going to approach Jean-Paul Beltoise's track record of 1:23.25. Even after I more or less knew my way around the track, I was still 17 seconds off his mark. How could I have become so bad again so quickly? Google must know. I typed in, "Why is Pepe so slow at Montjuic?"

The answer popped up instantly. This track --- "Jewish mountain" as translated in Catalan --- was first used by F1 in 1969. So the track files were created with that date in mind. JP and his friends weren't driving our cars; they had winged things that clearly are superior to our little autos. No, the 70% window (which I read somewhere is what you need at a minimum even to be qualifying) on GPL Rank for the Brabham is 1:40-1:42. Take heart, D2 drivers! All is not lost. Yet.  :)

Is it actually possible to learn this track? I'm willing to bet no more than 25% of the starting field in either division will finish.

67 F2 Mod

The link to the F2 mod download appears to be down yet again. Does anyone know of a mirror where the mod can be found? I've managed to destroy the *.exe file I used at Birmingham.

Mod 65 Installation

01 January 2018 - 07:47 PM

I've been trying for a couple of days to install the 1965 mod.  I first created a player file and found the appropriate installation file. It looks like everything is proceeding normally. It appears to have installed in the right directory, but when I look at the GPL folder I see only the original and updated gpl.exe and gplc67.exe (plus an gplc55.exe mod that I installed ten days ago). There are initialization and player files for the 65 mod (gpla65.ini/driv55.ini) and the complete '65 season is set up in GEM,  but there's no gplc65.exe (which I presume the 65 mod would be named).  Clearly I've done something wrong, but what?

Any help is sincerely appreciated.

F2 Benchmark Times In Gpl Rank

19 December 2017 - 05:59 PM

In GPL Rank in the 1967 F2 challenge the benchmark times appear to be lower than the benchmark times for the same tracks in F1. At Silverstone, for example, in the F1 cars the GPL Rank benchmark is 1:30.907, but for the F2 car it's 1:29.200. That seems to me to be inconsistent with what was actually going on at that track in 1967. Hulme had the fastest lap in F1 with 1:27 and Rindt did a 1:29 in F2. I thought they might be using different tracks or different configurations of the same track, but that is not so. Brands Hatch shows a similar oddity, with an F2 benchmark almost 3.5 seconds faster than the F1.

I fear that I have not had enough wine to reason through the puzzle properly. If anyone can help before I open the fourth bottle, I would appreciate it. My wife would appreciate it even more.
